The initial inspiration came from the shadows that were cast onto grass. After a few weeks she devised a process which did not make the subject on the canvas as a flat image. It is more like the image has been transformed to its own reproduction, and the surface takes an interpretation by the artist. This is especially effective when working with living things or items that are perishable like people or fruits. The ephemeral nature of her art style is apparent and what survives in Alexa Meade's work is the photograph. Trompe-l'oeil art is created by combining the two techniques of photographing and painting. This creates a flattened, two dimensional picture. Sometimes, Meade integrates her painted models into the 3D environment around them, which allows them to engage with this self-created world.
